The State Department Store, otherwise known as GUM, is located right inside the Red Square, across from the Mausoleum. Construction of the building began in 1890 (back then, GUM was called “Upper Trading Rows”), and it used to be the most popular place to spend time with the family. These days, the department store is home to luxury boutiques like Dior, Vilebrequin, Louis Vuitton, Escada, Gucci, and Hermes. Many luxury brands entered the Russian market through GUM. For example, there are flagship Manolo Blahnik and Bosco Fresh stores, along with Furla, which opened in May 2016.
The fountain in the center of GUM was revived in 2007. It’s a legendary structure that is documented in official 20th century chronicles and millions of private photographs. The legendary cinema, which is part of Russian film history, has also been restored. The exterior of the building features unique architectural lighting. Starting in 2006, a GUM skating rink has popped up on the Red Square every year. It has become the most festive skating rink in the capital.
Another famous feature of GUM is the famous ice-cream served in waffle cones. The ice cream can be purchased from kiosks on the first floor.
